How about supporting smaller businesses this Valentine's day?

I live in Ealing and every few weeks there seems to be a new supermarket or chain store opening. These are great; really convenient and I use them a lot but I'd like to support smaller business when I can, particularly if I'm buying something for someone who I want to feel a bit more special.

All the businesses I spoke to told me about what they had but they also directed me to who I should talk to next. They were all promoting each other's businesses rather than putting down the competition, which was refreshing.

Three beautiful flowers from The Cracked Pot on Northfield Avenue.

I wish the photos could show how great it smelled in there. The staff were really friendly and really seemed to know their flowers. Great for Valentine's day but also if you're looking for someone to do the flowers for your wedding, their studio is really worth checking out. If they make wedding venues look as good as their studio, I'd definitely recommend them.

Two delicious desserts from Yvon's.

Yvon's in a tiny cafe by the iron horse, it always looks full but I've always managed to find a place to sit down. They do great coffee and lovely cakes. While I was taking the pictures a customer said that he  takes detours through Ealing just so he can go there. He's slowly working is way across the line of desserts; hasn't picked a favourite yet but has loved all of them so far.

One set of handmade Lancaster and Gibbings keepsakes from Rumbles.

I never think people want key rings because they tend to already have them BUT mine is a grubby lego brick with one googly eye on it so this pewter one would actually be lovely. Rumbles has been in Ealing Broadway since I can remember; when I was a kid I loved their wrapping paper so much I put it on my wall instead of posters.  I spoke to the owner Nadia and the manager and 'window expert' Siobhan, it's easy to see that everything their boutique carries is well thought out and they genuinely enjoy what they're selling.

Above are what I found walking around but here are a few more ideas that I didn't get a chance to photograph.

Ana makes adorable cookies, she's running a one woman operation so you have to get your orders in quick.

Ruby Bijou is a jeweller whose instagram feed I'm pretty obsessed with. She makes all her produce by hand and I love what she does with dandelion seeds and rose petals.

Hope this has been some help, have a good Valentine's Day!
